Choosing a corner lounge

A corner lounge, or corner sofa, is the most seating you can fit into a room for the floor it takes up. Its L-shape sits along one wall and turns the corner, so five or six people face each other and the television at the same time, and in an open-plan room the short arm of the L quietly separates the living area from the kitchen. Whether you call it a corner couch, an L-shaped lounge or a corner suite, the choice comes down to which way it turns, how big it should be, and what it is made of.

Left or right hand corner

Stand facing the lounge: the corner can be on your left or your right, and that decides which wall the long side sits on and where the walkway runs. Draw the room first, mark the door, the television and the path to the kitchen, and the orientation chooses itself. Many of our corner lounges are made in both orientations, and corner modulars can simply be rearranged, so if you are unsure, a modular lounge keeps the choice open.

Small corner lounge or six seater corner suite

A small corner lounge for an apartment or a second living room runs around 230 to 260 cm on its long side and seats three or four. A standard corner lounge suite sits between 280 and 320 cm and seats five. A six seater corner lounge or family suite runs past 340 cm, often with a chaise on the end as well, and needs a room that can give it a clear 90 cm walkway on the open sides. Measure the long wall, subtract space for a side table, and check the pieces fit through the front door and hallway; fixed corner lounges usually arrive in two or three sections.

Corner lounge with a chaise, or a recliner corner

A corner lounge with a chaise adds a long open seat on the end for lying down, which stops the corner unit becoming the only comfortable spot. A corner recliner lounge builds a recliner into one or both ends; allow room behind the back for it to open. Open-ended corners, with no arm on the chaise side, make a large corner feel lighter in a smaller room.

Fabric or leather

Fabric corner lounges give the widest choice of colour and texture, from pale linen looks and boucle to tightly woven, stain-resistant family fabrics. In a busy room choose a mid-tone, textured fabric that hides marks. A leather corner lounge is the easiest to keep clean and the one to choose for pets and small children. Feather-wrapped cushions give the deep, relaxed look of modern corners; foam cushions hold a crisper line and need less plumping. Either way, look for a hardwood frame and a sprung or webbed base.

Finishing the room

A corner lounge anchors a room, so keep the rest simple: one coffee table inside the L, a rug big enough for the front legs of both arms, an ottoman for extra seating when guests come, and one armchair opposite the open side so the room has somewhere to sit that is not on the lounge.
