Bookcases & Shelving: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bookcase and a library?
A bookcase is a single unit of shelves, often with drawers or cupboards in the base, usually 180 to 200 cm tall. A library is a bookcase built to the full height of the room, often in a double width with a rolling ladder, and is used as a feature wall in a living room, hallway or study.
Are your bookcases flat pack?
No. The bookcases and libraries here are solid timber and metal pieces that are delivered assembled by our white-glove team, so the shelves stay square under a full load of books.
How deep should bookcase shelves be?
30 to 35 cm suits most books, including large hardbacks. Choose 40 cm shelves if you want baskets, boxes and decorative pieces on the same unit.
How much space does a library ladder need?
Allow the width of the library plus about 60 cm of clear floor in front of it so the ladder can travel along its rail and be leaned safely. A rolling ladder also needs the full height of the unit free of pendant lights or fans.
Should a tall bookcase be fixed to the wall?
Yes. Any bookcase over about 120 cm tall should be anchored to the wall with the fixings supplied, especially in a home with children. Our delivery team can position it ready for fixing.
Do you deliver bookcases across Perth and regional WA?
Yes. Add the bookcase to your cart and enter your postcode to see the delivery price; some regional areas need a custom quote through Find A Store. White-glove delivery includes carrying the piece in, positioning it and removing the packaging.
